River Engineering Design for Fitzsimons Creek
Resort Municipality of Whistler
Whistler, B.C., Canada (1999)

LaCas Consultants Inc., specialists in river engineering and hydrology of urban creeks; was retained by the Resort Municipality of Whistler to provide a cooperative riparian restoration engineering/ecological design and construction supervision for erosion protection of Fitzsimmons Creek and Rebagliati Park. The design provided for a temporary diversion of the entire Fitzsimmons Creek flow allowing construction of river engineering works below the covered bridge, within the 190m long de-watered main channel. The banks were armoured with angular rock riprap to protect the park and valley trail. A high degree of environmental protection was implemented using sedimentation ponds, silt fencing and staged construction and removal of a 30m long diversion dam. Significant mature trees were saved and a planting terrace above the rock armouring was constructed for community riparian planting on Arbour Day.
